The museum resides inside the historical Villa De Pisa, an elegant home built in the 1930s and obtained by the City shortly before the museum’s official inauguration in 1994.
The collection includes over 2000 artworks ranging from oils to watercolors, to sketches and drawings, engravings and sculptures, collected over the years partially thanks to the work of the Amici del Museo di Olevano association (AMO).
The pieces bear witness to the prominent role Olevano played in the history of european landscape art: starting from the end of the XVII century, the town became one of the most sought after destinations of the Grand Tour, drawing in artists from Germany, France, England, Denmark and Norway, fascinated by the uncontaminated beauty of the Prenestino territory.
Among the artists who contributed to the reputation of Olevano is Austrian artist Joseph Anton Koch (1768-1839), whose 20 original slabs celebrating the vedute romane (roman views) made in 1810, are preserved in the Museum. Next to these artworks are engravings, sketches and lithographs from other masters of the 19th century landscape art such as Johann Christian Reinhardt (1761-1847), Edward Lear (1812-1888) and Franz Gustav Arndt (1842-1904).
The exhibit itinerary stretches to modern days, with significant collections like the 40 sketches of Heinz Hindorf (1909-1990) and the Ralph Wunsche Archive (1932-2004), donated in full to the museum by the artist himself in 2007.
There is no shortage of prominent figures of Twentieth century italian art as wel, like Antonio Donghi and Alfonso Avenassia, with two artworks created for the Premio di Pittura Olevano in 1955.
The Museum’s Collection, ever growing thanks to donations from artists that still spend time in the territory, is a living testimony of the constant dialogue between Olevano and landscape art, able to bewitch generations of painters for the last two centuries.
